“A veteran assigned to extract Earth’s remaining resources begins to question what he knows about his mission and himself.”
Oblivion – Okay so I barely know anything about this film, but I know that it is about an Earth that is almost empty of resources, so empty in fact that it can no longer support human life. There are still some people left on Earth, whose job it is to find the remaining resources – and Mr. Tom Cruise is one of those people. I really enjoy the science fiction stories that cover isolation and how it affects us, and which delve into more cerebral aspects of the genre. Plus the music to this film is brilliant – thank you very much to Sarah J. Maas who recommended it to me when I met her in October!
Oblivion was released 14th April 2013.
“A medical engineer and an astronaut work together to survive after an accident leaves them adrift in space.”
Gravity – I read Empire magazine (movie magazine) every month, yet somehow I completely missed out on this one until it actually came out. Perhaps Empire didn’t cover it whilst it was in production, or perhaps I just wasn’t paying attention, but now that it’s out it is big. The cast members come to a grand total of two: George Clooney and Sandra Bullock. It’s had brilliant reviews, a great critical reception and sounds just my sort of thing. As much as I would hate to be in that sort of situation – space in general actually simultaneously fascinates and terrifies me – films like this really appeal to me.
Gravity was released 4th October 2013.
“The International Military seek out a leader who can save the human race from an alien attack. Ender Wiggin, a brilliant young mind, is recruited and trained to lead his fellow soldiers into a battle that will determine the future of Earth.”
Ender’s Game – I loooooooved the book by Orson Scott Card so I was really excited when I heard that there was going to be a film of it. Although I can’t really see them making the whole series into books (the weird chronology/time skips may cause issues), it’s exciting that there’s at least one film based on the series. It’s a shame that the author has some rather extremist and disturbing views, but that doesn’t lessen my enjoyment of the books.
Ender’s Game was released 1st November 2013.
“Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark become targets of the Capitol after their victory in the 74th Hunger Games sparks a rebellion in the Districts of Panem.”
The Hunger Games: Catching Fire – this second installment in the Hunger Games series of films will see Katniss and Peeta going back into the arena, and it will be deadlier than ever. Although generally considered the weakest book of the three, I still enjoyed this one and CANNOT WAIT for the film. It looks amazing, as well as visually stunning – just from the trailer alone it seems as though they’ve worked so much on developing how the Capitol and technology is presented.
The Hunger Games: Catching Fire will be released on 22nd November 2013.
Pacific Rim was released on 12th July 2013.
X-Men: Days of Future Past will be released on 23rd May 2014.
Divergent will be released on 21st March 2014.
What science fiction releases are you looking forward to, or what recent films did you miss in the cinema? Feel free to join in with your own post!
I’ve seen Oblivion and despite my very cold feelings towards Tom Cruise, it was a decent (and beautiful) film. However, not comparable to Gravity, which I saw last night and it gave me a proper movie hangover. I finally realised the purpose of 3D in movies. It was so good!I’m also looking forward to Ender’s Game and X-Men. Fiancé saw Pacific Rim and said it filled its purpose as a highly entertaining piece 🙂
I almost went to see Gravity on Monday, but plans changed – hopefully soon!Ooh good – I’m hoping it’ll be like Prometheus in that it was satisfyingly sci-fi and entertaining, but not necessarily cerebral 😉
Gravity was beautiful – watched it last weekend! The rest are still on my list to watch 🙂
I’m hopefully seeing it soon, can’t wait =)
I’m definitely looking forward to Catching Fire and Divergent!! I really want to see Gravity, too, but I can’t convince my husband to see it with me! I might end up just going all by myself. ;D
Nothing wrong with going to the cinema by yourself – in fact it can be very peaceful =D
Yesss, I like this post because sci-fi movies are the next best thing to sci-fi books. =DOblivion: I never really liked Tom Cruise so that kinda put me off but I know I will watch it because it has all sorts of awesome technology and special effects (from what I’ve gathered from the trailer).Ender’s Game: Gaaah, I so have to read the book soon ’cause the movie is out. Should happen any day.Catching Fire: I LOVE this book the best from the trilogy and I’m crazyyy excited for it. A few people on Twitter have already watched it and they loved it. Yayeee.Pacific Rim: Gaaah, I’ve been dying to watch it ever since I came to know about it. Shall happen soon.X-Men: I’m oblivious to the awesomeness that is X-Men. But I know I need to start from the beginning if I want to fangirl over it.Divergent: The latest trailer really looks good and the movie is coming out during my Birthday month so it’s like the best gift ever. =DAnother movie that comes to mind is Elysium but I’ve no idea if it’s good or not. There’s Matt Damon so I know I’m definitely watching it. =P
Yep, it looks preeeeetty cool! You have to read the book! It’s great =)There was a midnight showing of it here last night but I couldn’t go. Going to go with my sister at some point soon I hope.Pacific Rim is all over Tumblr, which just serves to remind me that I STILL haven’t seen it =(X-Men is BRILLIANT, its silly in places but that’s what makes it so fun. Definitely catch up ;)Ooh yay! I wonder if the film will be as faithful as the trailer makes it look?I forgot about Elysium! I want to see that one too.
I should see Gravity, but like you I am a little terrified of the idea of floating helpless in space but everyone praises it so I should give it a try! And all the upcoming movies I am looking forward to seeing too! Especially X Men cause I need to see pretty Michael Fassbender. LOL I loved Pacific Rim! It was really cool!
I know – apparently the 3D works SO well. Mmmm, Mr Fassbender…
I still have yet to see Oblivion, the premise looks really interesting (and I love that they filmed parts of it in Iceland!). I also really want to see Gravity, it looks amazing too xD
Gravity has had such good reviews, and all my friends who’ve seen it have loved it too =)
Gravity is brilliant – I saw it at the London IMAX and it was utterly riveting – everyone I was with thought the same.It really is an astonishingly good filmPacific Rim – I’d skip that unless you just like big stompy robots and don’t care about anything else. The acting is wooden, everyone except the two leads is more interesting – including the non-speaking parts. Oh, and it’s got possibly the world’s longest ever voiceover at the start.
Ooooh at the IMAX – I can imagine! The nearest IMAX to me closed down, sadly =(I have to admit that I kind of like the sound of it, even if it’s mindless ;D
I thought Oblivion was just OK. I had really high hopes but it fell kind of flat for me. If you search Oblivion on my blog you should be able to find the review. I saw Catching Fire last night and LOVED IT!
Yup, I’ve been told the film isn’t brilliant, but still I’d quite like to see it for myself, just to see whether I agree. Oh I’m jealous! I want to see it so badly =(
I felt the same about Oblivion as Amy, oops, but I was really surprised at a few plot twists. :3 I hope you’ll enjoy it! And I think I’ve raved enough about Pacific Rim already so WATCH IT!! Then I also caught Catching Fire last Friday and I’ll just advise you to prepare your heart (because I wept like 4 times). T_T I need to read and watch Ender’s! Also looking forward to the rest of the films! Eeek, so much excitement! Oh wait, did you catch Thor: The Dark World? There was some science in it that made the ending really confusing and hilarious for me. 😛
I knowwww, I wanted to see Pacific Rim ever since I saw the trailer ages ago, and I just never got round to it – or found anyone else who wanted to go and see it in the cinema =( I’m hoping to see Catching Fire this weekend with my sister, as my best friend doesn’t want to see it despite reading the books – she didn’t enjoy the first film at all =P And nope, still haven’t seen the second Thor film!
Man, if you can, persuade your best friend to see Catching Fire! I also didn’t enjoy the first film so my expectations for Catching Fire was that it’ll probably be the same but boy was I surprised when I finished it. :’D
I’m going with my sister on Sunday, can’t wait! =D
