Thoughts #17: If You Were A Superhero…

Lately I’ve been reading a lot of Marvel comics. I’m not sure what bought it on; I’ve always been a fan of comic books, superheroes and the Marvel films – but only lately have I really started reading about them. This lead me to thinking what my powers would be if I could choose them – and I just couldn’t work it out. So I thought I’d consider some of my favourite Marvel heroes to begin with. I’d also like to address the question to my readers!

  • Real name: Remy Etienne LeBeau
  • Aliases: Death, Le Diable Blanc, Cajun
  • First appearance: Uncanny X-Men #266
  • Powers & abilities: Can tap into the potential energy within an object, and transform it into kinetic energy, allowing the object to explode when thrown; hypnotic charm allowing a subtle influence; very accurate aim when throwing playing cards and knives; skilled fencer
  • Amazing because… I don’t know why, I’ve just always really liked Gambit. His appearance really appeals to me, plus his powers are unique and different whilst still being useful. He’s pretty good at one-to-one combat without his powers, and can take on groups of enemies with them – covered for all situations!

  • Real name: Anna Marie (surname undisclosed)
  • Aliases: Anna Raven, Miss Smith, Irene Adler, Mutate #9602
  • First appearance: Avengers Annual #10
  • Powers & abilities: Previously able to absorb the powers, memories and personality traits (and life force) of anyone she comes into skin-to-skin contact with; later immunity to poisons and a virtually indestructible body, above normal reflexes, psychic sense
  • Amazing because… Rogue has gone through a lot. She lost her parents at a young age and was raised by Mystique, and discovered her powers as a teen, when her first kiss fell into a deep coma. She has been part of both the X-Men and the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. I can’t even imagine not being able to touch a loved one for fear of killing them, and Rogue has lived with that for her entire life.

  • Real name: Clinton Barton
  • Aliases: Marksman, Longbow, Goliath, Robin Hood, Golden Archer
  • First appearance: Tales of Suspense #57
  • Powers & abilities: No powers as such, but Hawkeye is an incredibly accurate marksman, with above average reflexes and hand-eye co-ordination; trained with throwing weapons and for unarmed combat; natural athlete; combat strategist
  • Amazing because… Hawkeye is a normal man. He’s not a superhero, he’s not a mutant: he’s just really good at what he does. Extreme dedication and training is the reason that he is the most skilled archer in the world, and that is incredibly admirable.

And one hero I’m not really bothered about…

Squirrel Girl...

Squirrel Girl

  • Real name: Doreen Green
  • Aliases: None
  • First appearance: Marvel Super-Heroes #8
  • Powers & abilities: Enhanced strength, speed, agility and reflexes; small claws and enlarged incisors; squirrel-like abilities and able to communicate with squirrels
  • Yep, she’s a real Marvel superhero. Nope, I don’t get it either. Apparently she was created to bring some light-heartedness to the comics, but still… squirrels?? Really?? Although if you play as her in the Lego Marvel Superheroes video game, you get to throw squirrels at people, which is strangely fun…

So, what did I choose as my powers after considering all these?

It was difficult and took some consideration, but I’ve come up with three ideas. I didn’t want to pick the usual ones like flight, invisibility, super strength etc, I wanted something a bit different – and here they are:

  • The ability to speak and understand any language I come into contact with. I love languages, and how amazing would it be to be able to speak ALL of them?! This didn’t really come from any specific superhero, although a couple of them are at least bi-lingual; for example both Gambit and Rogue are fluent in French.
  • The ability to touch an object and immediately know its history. Partly inspired by Rogue, who can learn memories by touch, I’d love to be able to touch an object and know all about it – how awesome would that be for a museum curator? I could instantly tell who crafted something, what it was used for, when it was used.
  • The ability to travel in time, and take others with me. Yep, I’d love to be able to travel in time at will, but only if I could take others with me – perhaps as long as we were in contact some way I could take them with me. This has nothing to do with Marvel, and everything to do with Doctor Who.

What would your superhero powers be if you could choose anything? Do you have any favourite superheroes?

  1. Gambit is awesome.

If I could choose someone’s powers, I’d be happy with any of these 5:
    -Ghost Rider
    -Dr. Strange
    -Lifeguard, from X-Treme X-Men.

    1. I haven’t heard of Lifeguard, what can he do?

Thor has pretty awesome powers, though I’m not sure how I’d really use any of them but flying. Unless I got myself into some fights 😛

  2. Gah! How does one even pick anything like this? So many to choose from.
The only comic I’ve been picking up regularly the last few weeks is X-Force since they rebooted it (again). I even stopped picking up Deadpool, though I’d count him among my favorites. Not sure why. Maybe powers would be something like Cable though… But I might just be saying that because of all the X-Force I’m reading.

    1. I’ve got an X-Force comic to read actually, I got it from the library the other week. And Deadpool…

Cable’s powers would be cool. I’ve not read any comics with him, but I am aware of him.

  3. I would *love* to have the ability to pick up languages quickly! Maybe not the ability to understand them straight away, because I like learning them. I’d also like to be able to turn invisible because I could sneak onto flights and travel for free. Also, stopping time is a good option!

I feel like I need to go and watch the first X-Men movie now.

    1. That’s true, learning them is fun 🙂 But sometimes I wish I could just grasp things really quickly and understand right away. Haha, I like your reasons for turning invisible! 😀 Or teleportation so you could avoid the flights and get there instantly?

    1. I haven’t read about any of those ladies, as I’ve only really read Marvel series so far, rather than DC.

Would you want any of their powers? 😉

  4. I don’t read comics (though I love Batman, in the movies), but these characters have some great abilities/super powers. Let’s see.. I’d probably choose the ability to speak all languages, “enhanced strength, speed, agility and reflexes”, the ability to fly and I also would love to be able to transport myself to any place in the world 🙂
    Great post, Rinn!

    1. Which Batman movies do you prefer? I haven’t seen the older ones, but I enjoyed the most recent trilogy. Heath Ledger was a fantastic Joker. 🙂

Good choice of powers! We could chat away in any language we preferred, or several languages 😉

  5. Have you read Brandon Sanderson’s Steelheart, yet? It’s an interesting take on the superhero tropes. What happens when people start getting super powers and the powers make them evil instead of heroic?

    1. No, but I desperately want to! I’m waiting for the Kindle version to go on sale, because I’m trying to save money (she says, whilst spending away…). It looks fantastic 🙂

  6. I would love to be able to speak and understand any language! And the time travel ability of course! (Though if we had a TARDIS we could do both! :D) But probably the one ability I would love is being telepathic – but being able to turn it off and on! I don’t want to turn out like Sookie. LOL

    1. Yes, the TARDIS would solve a lot of problems! Although the TARDIS basically makes it seem like you’re speaking English all the time. I’d like to ‘hear’ the other languages, and understand them that way, rather than everything being automatically translated. More fun that way 😉

Oh gosh yes – if you’re telepathic, you do NOT want it Sookie style! I would hate that… I’m paranoid enough without ACTUALLY knowing what people are thinking about me!

  7. My god – I just went to comic con over the weekend and during the cosplay contest someone was dressed as squirrel girl!!!! Ha, no way. I was trying to figure out if it was real, or someone just really liked squirrels and made a costume around it. So, you just solved it for me. 🙂

I too like Gambit, and wish he was in the movies more. He was awesome in the Wolverine movie, and I obsessively read up on the character on wikipedia immediately after leaving the theater.

    1. Haha, really?? I bet not many people think to go as her. I’d not heard of her until I played the Lego Marvel game and unlocked someone called ‘Squirrel Girl’. Then of course I had to check whether she was a genuine Marvel character or invented for the game, and I was surprised to find that she was, in fact, real!

Gambit has some sad story lines 😦 And if I remember rightly, he didn’t have the great accent in Wolverine: Origins, did he?

  8. I haven’t read any Marvel comics but those powers sound so cool! I love the idea of learning an object’s history through touch – think of all the stories…

I think I would want the power of controlling remembering. So I could remember certain moments or people forever without ever worrying about memories fading, and to make people remember certain things that they’ve forgotten (thinking of Donna from Doctor Who…tears)

    1. Exactly, it would be amazing! 😮

Ooh, that’s a good one. Then you could eliminate all the embarrassing moments and memories too 😉

  9. “The ability to speak and understand any language I come into contact with.”

Douglas Ramsey from the New Mutants has this ability. It also includes computer languages and various codes. Which is pretty cool. From the DC side, Starfire has the ability to instantly learn the language of anyone she touches. However, that’s not her main power and the writers rarely use it.

Rogue is one of my favorite characters ever and I also really like Gambit. I agree that their powers are cool.

For myself, I’d definitely want flight.

    1. Oooh, really?? I had no idea! Codes would also be useful…

Flight is tempting, but I’m TERRIFIED of heights so I’d be so limited! 😉
