Dragons & Jetpacks: Books of the Month, February 2016

Dragons & Jetpacks is a science fiction and fantasy bookgroup, based on Goodreads. The group is open to all, all that is required is a Goodreads account. We read two books a month, one fantasy and one sci-fi – the second week of each month is when members make suggestions, and the third is used for voting. We’re always happy to meet fellow fans of the genres, so you’re more than welcome to join the group!

The Handmaid's Tale

Offred is a Handmaid in the Republic of Gilead. She may leave the home of the Commander and his wife once a day to walk to food markets whose signs are now pictures instead of words because women are no longer allowed to read. She must lie on her back once a month and pray that the Commander makes her pregnant, because in an age of declining births, Offred and the other Handmaids are valued only if their ovaries are viable. Offred can remember the years before, when she lived and made love with her husband, Luke; when she played with and protected her daughter; when she had a job, money of her own, and access to knowledge. But all of that is gone now…

The Fifth Season

Three terrible things happen in a single day. Essun, a woman living an ordinary life in a small town, comes home to find that her husband has brutally murdered their son and kidnapped their daughter. Meanwhile, mighty Sanze — the world-spanning empire whose innovations have been civilization’s bedrock for a thousand years — collapses as most of its citizens are murdered to serve a madman’s vengeance. And worst of all, across the heart of the vast continent known as the Stillness, a great red rift has been torn into the heart of the earth, spewing ash enough to darken the sky for years. Or centuries.

Now Essun must pursue the wreckage of her family through a deadly, dying land. Without sunlight, clean water, or arable land, and with limited stockpiles of supplies, there will be war all across the Stillness: a battle royale of nations not for power or territory, but simply for the basic resources necessary to get through the long dark night. Essun does not care if the world falls apart around her. She’ll break it herself, if she must, to save her daughter.

Have you read either of this month’s picks? What did you think?

  1. Really looking forward to Fifth Season. The last three NK Jemisin I have read have been amazing. Hopefully ready to start reading on Wednesday

    1. For some reason, everywhere I look the paperback is £11.10… I don’t know why! My local library doesn’t have it, so I will look into buying it second hand. Glad to hear you’ve enjoyed the author so far, let’s hope it’s the same with this one. 🙂

      1. Yeah the Mass Market PB isn’t out until later this year which would be cheaper. Its still a pretty new release.

      2. Oh I had no idea! I don’t really want the large format PB. 😦 Maybe I’ll wait… I haven’t read our Fantasy BotM in the right month for a long while though.

    1. Glad to hear! I won’t be reading The Handmaid’s Tale because I tried it once before and just did not get on with it… but I want to definitely read The Fifth Season.

  2. Its still the standard paberback size rather than those awful large paperbacks, just not on the cheaper paper with the smaller text
