Thoughts #39: Review Requests Are OPEN!

For almost the entirety of this blog’s existence, my review policy has claimed that review requests are currently CLOSED. However, that has not stopped requests from coming in. In fact, if I remember correctly I actually switched it to closed in the first place because I was getting loads of requests for books I had absolutely NO interest in. It was obvious that no-one was reading my review policy. After a while this slowed down, and whilst I still get a couple of requests a month, it’s nowhere near the amount it was before. Here’s what it used to say:

Review Policy

I have now adjusted it so it reads the following:

Review requests are currently OPEN, however I will not accept every submission.

I have also changed the genres I am interested in to reflect what I actually want to read at the moment. I also took into account the types of requests I previously received. Whilst I am interested in reading SOME paranormal novels, that’s a genre I’m quite picky with. Many of the requests I received before were the kind of paranormal novels I DON’T want to read – paranormal romance with vampires and werewolves, so I have removed that as a genre completely.

So why have I decided to re-open review requests?
  • My Netgalley ratio has improved drastically, so my backlog of books to review is much smaller than before.
  • I don’t like the idea of missing out on a really fantastic book just because someone saw that requests were closed!
  • My original reason for closing review requests was because I received many I just wasn’t interested in. However, now I feel I can turn away those I do not want to read without feeling guilty. When I first started blogging I wanted to please everyone, and didn’t even really think of doing a negative review – let alone one of a book that the author had sent me directly. Now I’ve gained more confidence in expressing my opinion, positive or negative.

In the day between changing my review policy and writing this post, I already received a review request, and did not feel bad for turning it down. From now on, review requests will remain open!

Do you accept books for review from authors and publishers, or would you rather hunt them out yourself? Do you have a very detailed review policy?
