Sci-Fi Month

Announcement: Sci-Fi Month 2016

It’s August, and that means it’s time to start thinking about Sci-Fi Month 2016! This year, Lisa from Over the Effing Rainbow is joining me once again, as my lovely co-host.

Now, onto the finer details…

What is Sci-Fi Month?

Sci-Fi Month is a month-long blog event, that I hosted for the first time in 2013, created to celebrate everything amazing about science fiction. From TV shows to movies, books to comics, and everything else in between, it was intended to help us share our love and passion for this genre and its many, many fandoms. It was such a success – and I honestly wasn’t expecting that many people to join in – that people were already asking in December whether it would be held again the next year! It happened again in 2014, co-hosted by Oh, the Books!, and again in 2015, when Lisa came on board.

Sci-Fi Month has a schedule that all participants can add to, meaning everyone can clearly see what is being posted each day. This also encourages participants to comment on and visit other blogs. More information on adding to the schedule below.

When is Sci-Fi Month?

Sci-Fi Month happens all November long, and takes place online – through each participant’s blog, Twitter feed, and other social media websites.

Who can participate?

Anyone! Bloggers, authors, readers, publishers – the first year saw over fifty bloggers, twenty-five authors and three publishers taking part regularly, as well as plenty more commenting, Tweeting, discussing and sharing the love for sci-fi, and this has only increased each year since. Even if you’re not a blogger, you’re taking part just by reading, commenting and Tweeting!

How can I sign up?

  1. Fill in the Google form
  2. Follow the official Twitter account, @SciFiMonth, for regular updates
  3. Get to know your fellow participants by viewing the list at the bottom of the page
  4. Start preparing for Sci-Fi Month 2016!

As with last year, there is no deadline for signing up – if you only learn about the event halfway through November, you’re more than welcome to join!

What sorts of things should I post for the event?

Let your imagination run wild! If it involves science fiction, then post about it! Last year, we had all kinds of activity, including:

  • reviews
  • interviews
  • discussions
  • quizzes and puzzles
  • bingo cards
  • top ten/favorite lists
  • giveaways

And it doesn’t have to be books. We had so many posts on TV shows, films, video games and all different kinds of things last year. You can see more information on post types etc here.

How do I add my posts to the schedule?

We are continuing to use the Google Docs spreadsheet. Everyone adds their own details, which makes it much easier for everyone. There are tabs for different post types, and details entered include post date, title, author, link to post etc – and these can be added at any time, even before the post has gone up, or several days after if you forget.

You can find the schedule spreadsheet here.

Is there a hashtag I can use to promote the event?

Yes! Please use the #RRSciFiMonth hashtag on Twitter, Tumblr, Facebook, and everywhere else! We also have an official twitter account: @SciFiMonth.

Are there any official Sci-Fi Month graphics I can use on my blog?

Yes, please feel free to use the new ones for this year, graphics from previous years, or make your own.

Who can I contact if I have more questions?

You can email me at rinnreads(at), tweet me at @RinnReads or @SciFiMonth. You can also contact Lisa through Twitter at @EffingRainbow. Or alternatively, you can comment on this post.

You can view a list of all participants here. I’m not having much luck with any Linky sites this year, so I’ve resorted to a Google Doc!

  1. I’ve just heard about this, and it sounds excellent! I don’t tend to blog much in November (NaNoWriMo/National Novel-Writing Month) but you’ve given me enough time to prepare some posts in advance. I’d love to take part this year.

  2. Hallo, Hallo Rinn & SciFiMonthers!

Guess whose coming to her 4th #RRSciFiMonth!? 🙂 This year is going to be so wicked freaking awesomesauce as Jorie has her grove together w/o any outside stresses blocking her bookish joy!! Plus! She’s getting her sci-fi geek on ahead of time, feat. science fiction throughout August + September kicking off with her ruminative thoughts on behalf of an incredible biographical sketch for *Kepler!* (see this quoted tweet s/o!). I’m calling these wicked good sci-fi showcases #FuellYourSciFi which is a nod & a wink towards gearing up for #RRSciFiMonth!

I’ll be tagging my posts (w/ SFN’s tag) this month (as I’m on the Clan Chronicles blog tour again this year!! I’m so wicked excited!!) as they start to arrive on my blog – hope some of you might come visit me ahead of November!! 🙂 Love to hear your thoughts on the works of non-fiction (mixed bag Science / Cosmology / AstroPhysics topics) and fiction (including anthologies!) I’ll be reviewing!! I had forgotten Rinn encourages us each year to keep the momentum going even during the ‘off-season’ of 11 months leading up to the next year’s event!!

So much awesome #scifi to share — so thrilled I’m in a wicked good place this year to be full-in!! I’ll be able to visit more blogs & participate wayy more than last year, too!

Can you tell I’m jumping out of my skin with excitement!?

Swing by and I’ll start to swing by everyone’s blog as well!

    *Sweet Cosmic Awesomesauce, you all!*

ps: Scope out my Clan Chronicles reviews early before end of August – as I’m reviewing books 2 & 3 of the Trade Pact ahead of going into Reunification in September!! Plus, a Q&A with Ms Czerneda! Seriously – this is the BEST hard sci-fi saga I have come across in my lifetime! It’s seriously that *unputdownable* and wicked brilliant (in concept, design and execution!)

  3. I’ll definitely be participating again this year. Without Fallout 4 taking up all my time I should be able to enjoy a wider variety of sci-fi wonderfulness. 🙂

  4. Hi Rinn! I found out about your event last year through Lianne over @ and I’ve just signed up to do it myself 🙂 Although there are certain SF films and TV shows that I reeeally love, I haven’t actually read very many novels from the genre. I thought your event would be a wonderful opportunity to spur myself onto reading more SF fiction this year and to connect with new people. I’m really looking forward to it!

For the event I thought I’d just do a quick little introduction post on the 1st and then, after that, go on to read and review two (or possibly three) SF books. I usually read about three or four books a month on average but I don’t really feel that I can commit myself to reading as many books as that for SF month because I’ll also be going on holiday during the middle of it. As for the books, one of those will definitely be Ernest Cline’s ‘Ready Player One’ and I’m still not entirely sure what the other(s) will be.

    1. Hello Hannah! 🙂 I’m glad to see you joining us. And no worries, hopefully SFM will introduce you to some great reads.

Sounds like a good plan! Ready Player One is amazing.

  5. I’m so excited for this! I’ve already started getting posts ready because if I don’t I will likely epicly fail (kind of like what happened last year) ha ha. Can’t wait to see what everyone else posts about and add things to my must read/watch sci book/movie/tv list.

  6. Hello! I’ve already made a start on writing my posts for November. I’m hoping to do two a week, a mixture of book reviews, TV and film posts and top 10 lists, with a Star Trek week in there for a belated 50th anniversary celebration. I’ll come back and add the clicky-links to the spreadsheet once the posts are up and running. I’m really excited about this!

    1. Excellent! 😀 I normally have most of my posts written by now, but September was a total write off… That sounds really great, I’m glad to have you on board, Katie!

  7. As much as I love the idea of this, and as much as I was looking forward to participating, my schedule will not succumb to my petulant desires. I thought it fair to say that I’m withdrawing my intent to participate so that my info could be duly struck from the list of participants. Maybe next year.
